arc and space behind me

2024

Arc and space behind me is an installation documenting a performance inspired by the cyclograph: a mechanical tool invented for drawing arcs of a circle which center is inaccessible. The installation proposes ways to experience the performance through its objects, video and documented traces.

The performance, via the use of the cyclograph, embodies the idea that there are ways in materializing an infinitesimal part of something larger than oneself. In other words, it is possible to work around a topic (the center of a circle) that is out of a current reach of consciousness, yet is intuitively attractive. Thus, using this instrument; a tangible way to act upon the physical world, can be taken as an intent to alter misgiving feelings towards complexity and angst of being misplaced.

On the beach, the moving horizon hides the sun as the tides constantly rise and fall. In this setting, forces of Nature are undeniably at work. Its cyclical tendency graspable. With the cyclograph used in a performative way, geometrical and natural laws try to meet, while in the body of the performer, action and consciousness join.

Arc and space behind me uses an enlarged cyclograph and its geometrical truth as a base of common understanding. This is put in a new arrangement to show its metaphorical potential. A tool initially able to lay out the flat curves of bridge’s arches, is reinterpreted with the gesture it requires at the center and the spirit of transformation inherent to the performative act.
